On Sunday Dec 13 students from both cities joined together for Chanukah Candle lighting event. Students from Net@ project in Dimona and students from Kol-Ami religious school connected via Skype at 6:00PM Montgomery time for a warm Chanukah festival.
In October the students of the village were stunned to find a herd of goats had been stolen from the animal corner during the night. The very same day we contacted our friends at the Jewish Agency who quickly responded to the students’ call for help. A few days ago the new goats arrived at the village. This is the time to express our heartfelt thanks to our friends overseas, representatives of the Jewish communities in North America and to the Paz fuel company, who opened their hearts and came to our aid.
Last month the school I run came alive with energy as 40 sixth-graders got to know 25 of their Israeli peers. They came together and discussed a Holocaust novel they had all read, did drama activities and an art project that grappled with what it means to be a leader, and participated in a workshop on tallit and tefillin with our school rabbi. One of my yearly highlights as a Jewish educator is watching as my students learn and forge new friendships with students from a suburban Tel Aviv school via an exchange program run by the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles as part of the Jewish Agency for Israel’s Partnership 2000 program. That’s why I was so disappointed by a recent decision by Israel’s Ministry of Education striking a grave blow to a program that has brought together thousands of young people from Israel and the Diaspora.
Earlier this month, the ministry’s director-general, Shimshon Shoshani, announced that beginning next year, Israeli students will be prohibited, when their schools are in session, from going on Jewish Agency exchange delegations to Jewish schools abroad. Israeli students would still be allowed to go on exchanges during vacation periods, but Israeli school vacations often coincide with Jewish holy days or with times American schools are also on break, making such arrangements impractical in many instances.
The Partnership 2000 delegation to Israel’s most prestigious business conference, December 13-14, 2009, featured leading businessmen and venture capital fund directors from North America. Procter & Gamble Israel CEO Sophie Blum chaired a Partnership 2000 panel featuring Shamrock CEO Stanley Gold, Chairman of the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles; Compedia CEO Gil Ilutowich; Bazan CEO Yossi Rozen; Journalist Saul Singer and Jewish Agency Chairman of the Board Natan Sharansky.

The winning formula of Partnership 2000, a program operated by the Jewish Agency, for businessmen worldwide with a Zionist vision, is their involvement with decision-making processes in Israeli society. Business networking is helping to connect Jews across the world with Jews who live in Israel.

“Shnat Kehila” is a Jewish Agency for Israel program which integrates young Jewish adults (ages 22-35) from the Diaspora into Young Communities in Israel. Program participants live in the young community for a period of up to 10 months, contributing to the community together with the community’s Israeli residents.
More than 40 Jewish women from Israel and the Diaspora came together last month to spend a week traveling across the Negev desert in the Jewish Agency’s Desert Queen expedition. The event, which was first held in 1999, and is organized by Geographical Tours Ltd., and took place for the second time in Israel, is an important celebration of feminism, Zionism and Jewish unity.
